Anchoring Your Putter to End in 2016

The R&A and the United States Golf Association (USGA), golf’s governing bodies, today announced proposed changes to the Rules of Golf that would prohibit anchoring the club in making a stroke.

The proposed Rule 14-1b, which follows an extensive review by The R&A and the USGA, would prohibit strokes made with the club or a hand gripping the club held directly against the player’s body, or with a forearm held against the body to establish an anchor point that indirectly anchors the club.

The proposed new Rule would not alter current equipment rules and would allow the continued use of all conforming golf clubs, including belly-length and long putters, provided such clubs are not anchored during a stroke. The proposed Rule narrowly targets only a few types of strokes, while preserving a golfer’s ability to play a wide variety of strokes in his or her individual style.

LPGA Legends and Current Stars Team Up for Charity

Naples area golf fans got to see the LPGA's past — Bradley, Lopez, Betsy King and Jan Stephenson — and its present and future in Player of the Year Lewis, Lincicome, Paula Creamer and 17-year-old Lexi Thompson.

Each current player was paired with a legend in the nine-hole scramble that was taped and will be shown at 8 p.m. Wednesday on the Golf Channel.

In addition to the money going to charity, Lewis found another meaning to the day.
"Something we're doing here today, which is cool, is celebrating our past, which I don't think we've done a very good job of doing," Lewis said. "Bringing back the former players and really showing the fans, remembering who these great players were, remembering that Betsy's in the hall of fame."

Community School boys lead area contingent into state tournament

The Community School boys, who return all but one player from last year's third-place team, are back and trying to move up a couple of spots in the Class 1A tournament at Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills. Senior Ben Balter, headed to Wake Forest, won the district title, and senior Jackson Stroup (Augusta State) won the region, with teammate Jake Marriott a shot back in third. Junior Ryan Celano, who already has committed to Florida, was the individual state runner-up last year.

The coach has been building for this tournament all season. It could come down to American Heritage, which finished second last year. Jacksonville-Bolles, the defending state champion, lost two seniors, but still is expected to contend, along with North Palm Beach-Benjamin.
